08 Mar What is the role of AI in Literacy, Numeracy and Digital Literacy?
The role of generative AI in supporting learners in the literacy and numeracy space is an emerging topic of discussion. A recent article published in the 2023 Fall edition of Adult Literacy Education on Generative AI Bridging Resource Gaps in Adult Education: The Role of Generative AI (Sarah Cacicio, Adult Literacy & Learning Impact Network, and Rachel Riggs, World Education) looks at the positives of GenAI in helping resource development. It also points to the negative impacts of bias and puts forward some mitigating strategies.
Closer to home, the VET Development Centre based in Melbourne, recently ran a session introducing key AI concepts including how models are constructed, where the data comes from and touches on how it can impact people who have literacy gaps. The session was run by Leon Furze and a recorded version will be available on the VET Development Centre website recordings page (fee attached).
There is a real need for more discussion around this area. The Hotline and ACAL are planning an online webinar on AI in adult literacy around mid-year. If you have any experiences in the classroom and are interested in participating, we would love to hear from you. Please call us on 1300 6 55506 or email [email protected].
