03 Dec Welcome to the last issue of Literacy Links for this year.
This is a good time for us to thank everyone who works so hard to provide literacy, numeracy and digital literacy (LND) support to adults across Australia. Teachers, education providers, literacy advocates, libraries, community organisations and the diversity of literacy mediators.
We also want to thank our callers and acknowledge their courage in picking up the phone and sharing their experiences. These conversations give the Hotline a deeper understanding of literacy and numeracy needs in Australia and provide powerful data on what’s happening on the ground. An important part of the Hotline’s role is to convey this information to governments to help inform policy and action plans.
As well, we want to say thank you to our colleagues in the literacy/numeracy sector with whom we work closely. These include Western Australia’s Read Write Now, 26TEN from Tasmania, Adult Learning Australia, Community Education Australia, Charles Sturt University and the Hotline’s Steering Committee.
Thanks especially to the amazing volunteers in peak bodies such as ACAL and the states and territory councils of adult language, literacy and numeracy. These knowledgeable and committed volunteers work many unpaid hours to improve policy and practice in our sector.
In this issue we look at:
- Literacy and numeracy teacher study options at Charles Sturt University. With the suspension of University of Technology Sydney enrolments these are now the only university courses available in Australia for people wanting specialist adult literacy/numeracy teacher qualifications
- 2025 Australian Training Award LLN finalists
- The 2025 NSW Adult Literacy and Numeracy Conference, Building Adult Literacy and Numeracy Futures
- Stories from the Hotline
- Summer reading
- Read Write Now Online tutoring
- News from Jobs and Skills Australia.
The Hotline also says goodbye to Jill Finch, a hugely experienced team member who is leaving at the end of the year. Jill has been a crucial member of the team led by Vanessa Iles, who helped rejuvenate the Hotline ten years ago. We also say goodbye and thanks to Kym Roach who has been acting manager while Vanessa Iles has been on leave.
We will be closed for the summer holidays from 5pm Friday 19 December 2025 and re-open on Monday 12 January 2026.
We wish you all a safe, happy and restorative festive season and look forward to working with you again in 2026.
