19 Aug Welcome to the August edition of Literacy Links
In this edition we feature an insightful interview with two experienced teachers who explore the similarities and differences between teaching literacy and teaching English as an additional language.
We also look ahead to what’s coming up in September, a huge month for adult literacy. Adult Learners Week (1-8 September) celebrates its 30-year anniversary with a wonderful line up of events across the country. And as most of you will know, 8 September is International Literacy Day, a UNESCO declared event to highlight the importance of literacy for all.
A key event for our sector is the Australian Council for Adult Literacy biennial conference, taking place on 4/5 September in Melbourne. The conference is now fully booked but there is a waitlist available for those still hoping to attend.
Also, in big news for the Hotline, our Manager, Vanessa Iles, has begun a well-earned break returning in mid-December. Since starting in the manager role, ten years ago, Vanessa has worked tirelessly to build the Hotline into a trusted and iconic national referral service. She has transformed the Hotline into a collaborative national centre for resources, research and advice for LND providers and community organisations across sectors and jurisdictions. Vanessa will be taking time out from her leave to present the latest Hotline research at the ACAL conference so you can catch up with her there.
A warm welcome to Kym Roach, a very experienced language, literacy and numeracy teacher from Lithgow TAFE, who will be acting in the manager role while Vanessa is on leave.
