06 Feb New, revised ASQA Standards for Registered Training Organisations (RTOs)
ASQA’s new Revised Standards for RTOs will come into effect from 1 July 2025. Teachers and managers need to know about the changes which affect both stand-alone LND programs and learner support in VET.
The new standards make it clear that RTOs need to deal respectfully and supportively with learners through sensible requirements like
- Checking Literacy and Numeracy skills before enrolment (and keeping records of this)
- Making sure the course is suitable, or
- Suggesting more suitable alternatives
- Having properly qualified trainers
- Providing learner support throughout
- Having a complaints mechanism.
The new standards are intended to help RTOs to better understand their obligations in relation to training and education. The changes are designed to better reflect the diversity of the VET sector and ensure they are fit for purpose across the range of RTO settings.
The Hotline receives calls from learners struggling to complete VET courses, and from RTOs seeking advice on supporting students with literacy/numeracy gaps. We hope that the new standards will improve the experience of learners.
Draft Regulatory Guidelines
Up until July 2025 ASQA will be progressively releasing Practice Guides on its website to support providers’ understanding of their regulatory expectations against the revised Standards for RTOs.
