Keiko is retiring!

Many of our readers will know Dr Keiko Yasukawa and will remember her fondly as an inspirational lecturer, researcher and mentor. Keiko is best known in NSW, but has had an enormous influence on our field nationally for over 25 years. As well, Keiko has also been a valuable member of the Hotline’s Steering Committee.

Keiko is retiring in July 2025 from the University of Technology Sydney, where most recently she has been a lecturer and coordinator of UTS’s influential TESOL and Applied Linguistic courses.

Her contribution to the professional development of the field of foundation skills has been considerable, especially in her particular field of adult numeracy. Her very practical teacher workshops and resources have given confidence, and provided a firm theoretical basis for many teachers who may have approached the teaching of adult numeracy with anxiety and diffidence.

Teachers have told us how valuable they found the recent series of videos developed by Keiko in collaboration with the Reading Writing Hotline, Adult Numeracy Teaching: More than Worksheets.

Keiko’s professional life has had a global reach also. She is the author of a range of influential journal articles and has co-authored a number of research projects with fellow academics overseas.

As president of the NSW Adult Literacy and Numeracy Council from 2009 to 2024, Keiko has undertaken a range of policy advocacy. Her wisdom and sage advice on policy issues has also been frequently sought over the years by many.

The Hotline thanks Keiko for her huge contribution to the field of adult literacy and numeracy and wishes her a very well-deserved retirement from UTS. Luckily for the field, Keiko will continue her research and involvement in the literacy and numeracy sector.
