08 Mar Happy International Women’s Day!
Count Her In: Invest in Women. Accelerate Progress is this year’s theme for International Women’s Day (IWD) on Friday 8 March. IWD is an occasion for us all to celebrate what women have achieved through strong and determined struggles. It is also a day to highlight the work that still needs to be done to build gender equality.
Literacy, numeracy and digital literacy are key to women’s empowerment and ability to fully engage in the economy and community. Adult Learning Australia is holding a panel discussion to explore these issues: Empowering Women through Literacy, Learning and Inclusion. It will be held on Wednesday 13 March.
The Hotline recently caught up with Yumi Lee, CEO of the Older Women’s Network to hear about the literacy issues of older women. These included issues such as addressing digital exclusion, supporting women to navigate and understand complex legal and financial documents and forms, and supporting women with deteriorating eyesight.
Yumi talked about the specific needs of older women around using digital devices. “What older women find helpful is one on one regular support… once they get the hang of the apps they want to use, they can confidently navigate their way around.”
This theme is reflected in the interview with Sally Hodgson about her Smart Devices course.
