17 Mar GenAI helping us out…?
Ben* called us wanting some one on one support as well as an adult literacy course. He said he listens to the ABC and wants to be able to pick up a book and read it. Some of his other goals are to learn about world history and to gain writing skills so he can comment on social media. The Hotline teacher connected Ben with a volunteer tutor as well as to a local adult literacy class.
So how did he find us?
Ben said he asked AI for adult education and the Reading Writing Hotline’s number came up!
This led us to explore responses from the GenAI that we use. As we know… it’s all about the prompts. “How can I improve my reading and writing?” generated strategies around what the individual could do by themselves. “Where can I go for help to improve my reading and writing?” came up with suggestions based on our (not included) NSW location. Reassuringly, the Hotline appeared first on a list of options with the phone number. However, GenAI’s summary of options was not quite right. The Hotline was described as free and local. But it is more than that; it is a referral and advice service for all types of literacy, numeracy and digital literacy provision.
