Are you in Victoria? Why not check out VALBEC?

VALBEC is a not for profit, volunteer managed, professional organisation that has represented the adult literacy, numeracy and basic education fields in Victoria since 1978. It provides leading professional development as well as advocacy and advice on curriculum, government policy and matters that impact on practitioners and learners in Victoria and nationally.

Professional development activities include an annual state conference, webinars, workshops and half day forums. To see the incredible diversity of professional development, check out the VALBEC website. Recent examples include webinars on two new workplace numeracy resources developed for Learn Locals to use to support learners who are interested in working in different industries.

The upcoming 2026 VALBEC Conference Reflecting on the Past, Shaping the Future will be held on Friday 15th May 2026 at the William Angliss Institute, 555 Latrobe Street, Melbourne. The conference will bring together adult literacy and numeracy practitioners, leaders and researchers to reflect on “where we have come from and explore how we can shape future practice in a changing educational landscape”.

The VALBEC flagship journal, Fine Print, is another good reason to join. It is the only national high quality journal in Australia dedicated to discussion and debate about good practice, theory and policy issues around adult literacy and numeracy. And it’s a great read.
