06 Feb A win for the adult literacy and numeracy sector
A huge thanks to the ANZSCO Review Program who listened to the voices of the adult literacy and numeracy sector and created a separate occupational code specifically for adult literacy and numeracy teachers.
The new code is part of the Occupation Standard Classification for Australia (OSCA), which was released by the ABS in December. OSCA replaces the previous ANZSCO occupational codes. Details of the new code can be found here: Occupation 259931 Adult Literacy / Numeracy Teacher | Australian Bureau of Statistics.
Why is this important?
A discrete occupational code raises the sector’s visibility and means the LND sector can now be included in a broader range of policy and funding initiatives.
The new code will cover all adult literacy and numeracy teachers
Although the code currently has an ambiguous clause about people working in VET and TAFE, the ABS says that
“The intention is that all Adult Literacy / Numeracy Teachers are included in 259931 Adult Literacy / Numeracy Teacher, even if they work in VET, RTO and TAFE settings.”
