Support for students with dyslexia

Many callers to the Hotline tell us they have dyslexia, or another form of learning difficulty.  Whether or not a person has undergone a formal assessment for dyslexia, significant life-long difficulties with reading, spelling and/or writing from childhood can often point to an underlying learning difficulty.

Occasionally the Hotline hears of innovative programs designed to meet the literacy needs of those with dyslexia. One recent example is the course Adult Dyslexia / Reading Difficulties Intervention (801-000003NAT) currently offered by TAFE NSW – Newcastle Tighes Hill Campus. Enrolment in this innovative, flexibly delivered, part-time course offers small group support focussing on phonics, phonemic awareness, fluency and spelling (orthography and morphology).  For more information, you can email Johanna O’Connor at [email protected].

Further, in addition to providing information and free, targeted resources, the Hotline regularly helps callers by referring them to their state-based SPELD organisation. SPELD aims to provide support, advice and learning resources to educators, learners and their families.

If you or your training organisation is doing something innovative or interesting in the area of adult dyslexia or learning difficulties generally, the Hotline would love to know!
