17 Mar Are you in Western Australia? Why not check out WAALC?
The Western Australian Adult Literacy Council (WAALC) is a not-for-profit organisation. WAALC provides a professional network and advocacy body for people involved in English language, literacy, numeracy, digital and employment (LLNDE).
Their goal is to promote an informed awareness, understanding and use of equitable, inclusive, and quality English LLND services and resources in Western Australia.
Members and recent projects
Members and friends include a diverse group of paid and volunteer: practitioners, tutors, administrators, counsellors, librarians, academics and a range of committed community members.
In 2023, WAALC established a partnership with the State Library of Western Australia to deliver services that support training and networking for 150+ state-wide teachers, LLND practitioners and volunteers.
In 2024, WAALC established a professional learning partnership with the Mathematics Association of Western Australia (MAWA) to conduct mathematics workshops that assist LLND practitioners to:
- build their confidence and understanding of mathematics
- how to teach mathematics to adults with low level numeracy skills
- how to teach contextualised problem-solving strategies.
WAALC website
The WAALC website provides information about LLND teaching resources and professional development opportunities, in particular, a range of valuable resources about numeracy, digital literacy and multiliteracies. A current focus on the website is e-Safety teaching resources including a couple of ACSF Level 1–2 activity ideas using reading material from the Little Book of Scams. Check out the WAALC website for more information on what is happening in your state and across Australia.
WAALC is keen to:
- extend their online reach to members and friends living in regional and remote areas of WA
- strengthen networks in the literacy field and encourage the public to participate in lively discussions on adult literacy issues
- continue to advocate at a local, state and national level for improved access to quality English LLND services and resources in Western Australia (e.g., the national inquiry into adult literacy, a WAALC representative sits on the Australian Adult Literacy Council
- develop networking and professional relationships with adult and community education centres and services (e.g., Linkwest)
- put people in touch with literacy experts across a range of LLND topics and contexts
- increase its membership base.
