Established in 1977, The NSW Adult Literacy and Numeracy Council (NSWALNC) is the peak professional body in NSW for practitioners of adult English language, literacy, numeracy and digital literacy (LLND). The Council is made up of adult literacy and numeracy practitioners, program managers, researchers and teacher educators, including representatives with extensive collective expertise in the LLND field.

The Council’s role is to promote awareness, cooperation and understanding amongst providers in the field of adult LLND by promoting practice-informed research and research-informed practice, and by providing professional development opportunities. The Council has a voice in policy and its implementation, providing submissions and feedback to government, industry and non-government peak bodies to influence decision-making affecting literacy and numeracy policy and practice.

Professional Development is a key part of its work. Membership of the Council entitles you to attend PD workshops for free throughout the year as well as a discounted rate at the Annual conference.

The Council holds an annual NSW Adult Literacy and Numeracy Conference, usually in early December, bringing both local and overseas keynote speakers and workshop presenters together to share their knowledge and experience.

The Council also hosts regular face-to-face and online seminars workshops. and reading and discussion groups for practitioners to support their professional connections and engagement with recent research in the field of adult LLND.  Past workshops have included multimodal and visual literacies, teaching online job seeking skills, and teaching and learning with AI technology.   Four workshops/ reading circles are being planned for 2026.
