2024 was another huge year for the Hotline.
The special moments for us in 2024 were about meeting so many wonderful literacy and numeracy teachers, providers, library staff, partners and stakeholders at meetings, workshops, events and conferences. Hearing about the work you are doing in adult literacy and numeracy is truly awe-inspiring.
Along with many of you, we celebrated our 30th anniversary in a heartwarming event in April attended by Commonwealth and State Ministers. This was a great opportunity to acknowledge the hundreds of thousands of courageous callers and the many people across Australia who have supported the Hotline and ensured its continuation and success.
2024 was also a significant year generally with landmark initiatives including the redesigned SEE program commencing in July, the National Skills Agreement, the consolidation of Jobs and Skills Councils and the NSW ACE Strategy.
A key issue for most of us in 2024 has been the LND workforce crisis. Though there is a lot more to be done in this area, 2024 saw some important developments to increase the number of qualified LND teachers. These include
- increased availability of Commonwealth Supported Places in university LND teacher training programs, making these courses more affordable
- development and piloting of the TAFE NSW Adult Literacy and Numeracy Teaching program
- conversion from casual to permanent teaching positions in TAFE NSW
- the professional development program trialled by Community Colleges Australia.
We contributed our expertise and knowledge of adult literacy and numeracy issues in a significant number of government forums and with industry partners. The insights and data gained from our callers’ experiences, from LND providers and from our stakeholders and partners is a unique and valuable resource.
A big thanks to our Hotline team for their outstanding expertise, empathy and ability to build callers’ confidence over the phone, and the care they take to find options that work.
The Hotline will be closed from Monday 23 December 2024 and returning Monday 13 January 2025. Have a well deserved and relaxing holiday. We look forward to working with you again in 2025.
