Adult Literacy for Life – Ireland’s new 10–year Strategy

The new 10-year Adult Literacy for Life strategy, recently launched by the Irish Government, takes a whole of society approach to equip all adults with the literacy skills they need.  Over 2000 individuals or organisations fed into the development of the strategy.

The strategy which comes with funding, makes targeted commitments including reducing the number of adults in Ireland with unmet literacy and numeracy needs and those without basic digital skills. It also commits to increasing the number of learners engaging with literacy and language support by expanding the range of courses available.

Innovative actions for the initial phase include:

  • A major national campaign around literacy awareness and available support
  • Appointing regional Literacy Coordinators to drive partnerships at regional and local levels.
  • A one stop shop web resource bringing together information and advice on literacy.
  • Expanding the NALA freephone service to sit alongside the one-stop shop resource.
