The 26TEN Disability Workplace Literacy Project

National Disability Services in conjunction 26TEN and have developed three tools for employers in the disability sector.

Disability Workplace Literacy Activity

This tool enables an employers to gather information about potential and current employees’ literacy and numeracy skills.

This can help to see if their skills:

  • Match the requirements of the position, or
  • Require more development in the workplace, or
  • Are not adequate for the position

Get ready to assist clients with medication

This learning guide provides Direct Support Workers (DSWs) with activities they can use to revise the core skills needed to successfully participate in the unit of competency, HLTHPS006 ‘Assist clients with medication’.

This tool can be used in all sectors to ensure information is presented in a way that helps others to understand the message. Plain English can be used in a range of workplace documents including email, reports, policies, procedures and forms.

Working Well in Childcare

Provides resources to support the teaching and learning of specific language, literacy and numeracy skills required for successful participation in Certificate III in Children’s Services training. A CD-ROM resource to assist market gardeners with chemical spraying. This interactive CD-ROM (with print-based Trainer Guide) covers topics such as selecting, transporting and storing chemicals, calibrating and measuring, spraying and cleaning up. Supports AQF I – III competencies common to Amenity Horticulture, Rural Production and Conservation and Land Management.

Steps to Safe Spraying is a resource to assist market gardeners with chemical spraying. The resource consists of an online interactive resource, Trainer Guide and Learner Workbook. The resource aims to support the development of language, literacy and numeracy skills for a number of key units in AHC10 Agriculture, Horticulture and Conservation Training Package.

These industries have been identified as providing potential employment options for Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander young people.
